CHAPTER 10

The messages from her sisters got through to Ogwen. She had nightmares, waking up sweating and weak so that Einir wondered if the flux was back and dosed her with herbs. Ceinwen sat with Ogwen and held her hand.

‘What can I do? I want to help you, Ogwen.’

Ogwen looked sad.

‘It’s the hardest part of being a healer. You can’t make someone better. We all have to face our demons sometime.’

‘But surely you are safe here in camp,’ she whispered, looking pale and worried.

‘Not really. If you have got the hounds of your fate at your heels, the only way is to face them and see what happens.’ She said this seriously. She wasn’t joking. Ceinwen would need this wisdom at some time in her life, and Ogwen believed you helped young people the most by being honest with them. She wouldn’t hide the truth. Her dreams were telling her to leave and quickly. Since she was a woman of power she would certainly listen and act.

‘Look, I need you to protect Morwen when I go.’ She squeezed Ceinwen on the shoulder. Ceinwen dropped her head and there were tears in her eyes.

‘I know you didn’t kill Morwen’s mum. I just know it. Why can’t the others see that?’ Ceinwen let the tears roll.

‘It’s not enough to be innocent, you have to prove it these days. There are evil forces at work everywhere. Don’t be fooled into thinking they have gone away when things go well. They are just waiting their chance,’

It was true enough. You had to be alert and know that life was never completely certain.

‘I will look after Morwen but I want you to promise you will come back.’ Ceinwen looked straight into Ogwen’s eyes. She nodded. Then she whispered to Ceinwen and the girl nodded and looked surprised.

Later that day she and Ceinwen made off into the forest as if they were taking a walk, the herb bags slung around their shoulders. All looked normal back at camp as they left. They made good time walking quickly through the woods.

‘Where exactly are we going?’ whispered Ceinwen.

‘No need to whisper now,’ said Ogwen.

‘It all feels so hard and I’m confused.’

‘Well,’ said Ogwen, ‘You’ll find out soon enough.’

They picked up their pace and reached the cove with the cave set into the cliff side.

‘See anything unusual,’ she said, ‘Anything over the other side of the cove?’

Ceinwen peered intently at the cliffs and the cove and the dark sea stretching out beyond.

‘No.’ she said, ‘I don’t see anything but the sand and the cliffs and water.’

Ogwen nodded in satisfaction. ‘Good.’

She led Ceinwen up the cliff side to the cave and led her inside.

‘Well I never!’ The surprise on Ceinwen’s face was obvious. ‘However did you find it?’ said Ceinwen.

‘Sharp eyes and intuition. See, it pays to follow your feelings not your head.’ Ogwen had taken some coals from the fire and wrapped them in moss. They were smouldering comfortably in her pocket. She dragged some dry wood out from the back of the cave and laid a fire in the fire pit.
